We shall not fail or falter; we shall not weaken or tire. Neither the sudden shock of battle nor the long-drawn trials of vigilance and exertion will wear us down. Give us the tools and we will finish the job.
Sir Winston Churchill
Steve Miller not only designs prosthetics for a living with Hanger, but he is also in the unique position of having had rotationplasty surgery over 20 years ago. He shares his personal experiences with patients who are faced with amputations and speaks at national professional and educational meetings across the country.
When Steve was eleven years old, he found a lump on the back of his knee that turned out to be osteosarcoma. Dr. Dempsey Springfield was the oncologist from Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida, who gave Steve's parents the option for rotationplasty. Since selecting to go ahead with the procedure, Steve has been as active as any normal person could possibly be. Steve has been in the O&P field for more than fifteen years and has successfully fitted more than thirty-five cases of rotationplasty.
To restore complete function after the rotation-plasty procedure, a properly designed and fitted prosthesis is a must. When I originally had my first prosthesis made it was in no way properly made. I was then having the prosthesis made in Gainesville, Fl., but I was living in Savannah, Ga. My parents were driving me constantly back and forth getting adjustments made with no real results. The decision to get the rotationplasty procedure done was seeming to be at that point the wrong one. I then was introduced to a local prosthetist at Hanger O&P, Al Kritter CPO FAAOP, who was luckily very familiar with the rotationplasty procedure. This is where my life with rotationplasty changed. The prosthesis he made for me was perfect. I quickly learned I could do everything I was doing before my surgery. Needless to say but I learned at an early age the importance of a properly made prosthesis . Since then the design of my prosthesis has changed but the fit remains the same.
